PRESS RELEASE FOR CELEBRATION 50, (feb 28, 2008)
Jane Craig and Jim Brownell, co-chairs of “Celebration 50”, were joined by committee members and members of the Lost Villages Historical Society at the Forbes Memorial Reading Room, Lost Villages Museum when they announced plans and celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of the Hydro and Seaway projects of the 1950s.

“Celebration 50 will be a five day event, recognizing the fiftieth anniversary of the Hydro and Seaway projects of the fifties, and to celebrate the creation of our new towns of Long Sault and Ingleside, on the shores of beautiful manmade Lake St. Lawrence,” said Jane Craig, president of the Lost Villages Historical Society.

“As the past president of the Lost Villages Historical Society, it is, indeed, an honour for me to co-chair Celebration 50 with Jane Craig,” said Jim Brownell.  “As I had the privilege to do in 1988 and 1998, when I co-chaired with the late Fran Laflamme, I look forward to working with a great team of community minded citizens who wish to continue recognizing this piece of our community’s history and heritage.”

The Celebration 50 events will centre on the July 1st Canada Day holiday, for it was on July 1, 1958, that dynamite tore open the 1st cofferdam, and the water of the St. Lawrence River rolled over 40,000 acres of farmland and deserted communities that hugged the river in the old Royal Townships of Cornwall, Osnabruck, Williamsburg and Matilda.

During Celebration 50, we will welcome visitors from near and far, as we gather to reminisce and recall memories of gentler times along the St. Lawrence River. Minds will turn to the history and heritage of the “Lost Villages” and those citizens who were uprooted from family homesteads that had been passed down for generations.  A half century has not faded the memories of life in the Lost Villages of Mille Roches, Moulinette, Wales, Dickinson’s Landing, Farran’s Point, and Aultsville and the lost hamlets of Woodlands, Santa Cruz and Maple Grove and these memories will be front and centre to the community celebrations.  While we reflect on bygone memories, celebrations will also recognize the “spirit and determination” of the more recent pioneers, who, 50 years ago, created and forged new lives in our new towns of Ingleside and Long Sault and those who inhabit the towns today. We will remember the 6500 displaced persons and the 530 homes that were moved to higher ground.

Celebration 50 will kick off with registrations and a wine and cheese party on Friday, June 27th and the party will continue with a dance on Saturday, June 28th at the Long Sault Arena. This dance is a combined celebration by the Rothwell Osnabruck School Reunion Committee and the Celebration 50 Committee

Many churches and service clubs will be hosting breakfasts, lunches and dinners for residents and visitors.  On Saturday, June 28th, a Celebration 50 parade will be held and residents are encouraged to join with neighbours and submit floats and street entries.  Along with members of the Fort Henry Guard from Kingston, Ont., the parade will feature bands, clowns, antique cars and a float that will recognize and honour citizens from each Lost Village.

“A full calendar of events is planned for the five day celebration and residents and visitors are encouraged to register early for this fantastic community celebration,” said Jane Craig. “The committee has worked hard to present a variety of events, where stories will be told and memories shared. Bus tours, ghost walks and story telling events at the Lost Villages Museum will allow Celebration  50 participants to learn about the colourful stories and history of the Lost Villages.

On Canada Day, July 1st, festivities will be held at the Lost Villages Museum, Ault Park, where the official opening of the Stuart home, formerly from the “lost village” of Wales, will take place.  The house, built circa 1810 by Dr. James Stuart, a surgeon in the King’s Royal Regiment of New York, was donated by the Stuart family and restored by volunteer members of the historical society. Stuart family members will be joined by historical society members and Canada Day celebrants at Ault Park, a the home is opened and will serve as a reminder of Celebration 50 activities in the Township of South Stormont.”
